Coo & Current

Coo & Current

The Tide and Turret Series Map collection traces Knockbrex and the Islands of Galloway the tidal edge of the Irish Sea, tracing the quiet presence of sea-worn islands, rocky shores, and the layered histories that shape this wild, elemental coastline.

At Knockbrex, James Brown developed formal gardens, woodland walks, and estate cottages. He extended the original Georgian house and built unusual additions such as the “Coo Palace” – an ornate cattle byre with a tower and telescope. Down at the shore, he constructed a stone harbour for fishing, marked by three distinctive stone pillars that still stand.

The harbour looks out towards Barlocco Island and Ardwall Island, two tidal islands that were also part of the Knockbrex estate and remain key features of the local coastline.
